Thematic Learning
Students explored the theme of The Five Senses through a variety of interactive, hands-on activities during the September holiday program. They learnt how their senses help them understand and interact with the world around them through games, sensory exploration, outdoor activities, food tasting, music, and creative experiences.
Arts & Crafts
Students created a colourful collaborative mural while practising their crossing-the-midline skills. They used different colours to create patterns across the paper, encouraging creativity, visual perception, coordination, and fine motor control.
As part of the Five Senses program, students also participated in Scented Painting, creating artwork using paints infused with different scents. This activity allowed them to combine creativity with sensory exploration.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
Students participated in a hands-on self-grooming game designed to practise important daily living skills. They learnt and reinforced routines such as brushing their teeth, washing their face, and combing their hair.
These activities encouraged students to develop greater independence, follow simple routines, and understand the importance of personal hygiene and self-care.
Sports & Gross Motor Skills
Students participated in a variety of games and movement activities designed to develop their crossing-the-midline skills. They practised passing balls across their bodies and transferring toys and objects from one side to the other.
These activities supported bilateral coordination, body awareness, motor planning, hand-eye coordination, and overall gross motor development.
Holiday Program – The Five Senses
During the September holiday program, students explored the Five Senses through a range of fun and engaging activities.
Sense of Sight:
Students participated in an I Spy game and an outdoor Scavenger Hunt, where they searched for and identified different objects, places, and structures around the playground. These activities encouraged observation, visual attention, and identification skills.
Sense of Hearing:
Students played Guess the Sound using cups filled with different objects, listening carefully to identify the sounds produced. They also took part in a Music Jam Session, exploring different sounds and rhythms using a variety of musical instruments.
Sense of Taste:
Students explored different flavours, including sweet, sour, and salty, through food tasting activities. They also participated in a Taste Relay, where they identified and matched foods according to their different tastes.
Sense of Smell:
Students explored a variety of familiar scents using ingredients such as ginger, pandan leaves, and garlic. Through sensory exploration and Scented Painting, students learnt to identify and distinguish between different smells while engaging in a creative activity.
Sense of Touch:
Students played Guess What’s in the Box, identifying hidden objects using only their sense of touch. They also created their own Sensory Boards using materials with different textures, including squishy, bumpy, crinkly, and smooth surfaces.
These activities provided students with opportunities to explore sensory differences, develop descriptive and identification skills, and engage with their environment through hands-on learning.
Fine Motor Skills
Students participated in activities that encouraged the development of fine motor control, hand strength, coordination, and dexterity. Creating patterns during art activities, handling different sensory materials, and manipulating objects during sensory games provided opportunities for students to strengthen their hand and finger movements.
Overall
Students enjoyed a meaningful month of learning and exploration through the theme of The Five Senses. Through academic exercises, sensory exploration, self-care activities, sports, arts and crafts, and hands-on holiday program activities, students developed their academic knowledge, independence, coordination, communication, creativity, sensory awareness, and everyday functional skills.
The September program provided students with opportunities to learn through their senses while encouraging active participation, exploration, and confidence in their daily learning experiences.
